The trails will take participants to some of Wicklow’s most scenic locations including Bray Head, Killruddery Gardens, The Great Sugarloaf, Powerscourt Waterfall, the Wicklow Way, Lough Tay viewing point and Piers Gate and all the way to Roundwood and the Vartry Reservoir.
“This event will be a truly scenic feast” says Fred Verdier from Wicklow County Tourism. “Exclusive access to the world renowned Killruddery and Powerscourt Estates will very much enhance the experience for the participants. Any running enthusiast should have this event on their ‘must do’ list”.
While the long distances are probably for the experienced trail runners, the shorter routes are ideal for road runners that want to have a try at trail running.
Ecotrail was first organised in Paris ten years ago with the objective to connect the city with the outdoors with a stunning finish on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower. Ecotrail comes with a very strong eco-responsible ethos and each event is committed to reduce litter, minimise environmental impact and promote public transport. The Ecotrail concept has been recreated around various cities in Europe and is now held in Reykjavik, Oslo, Stockholm, Brussels, Geneva, Florence, Madrid and Funchal (Madeira).
“The concept of Ecotrail offers a truly international exposure and is ideal to promote the the Wicklow Outdoors brand” says Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council. “The platform will give Wicklow twelve months on constant exposure through the various Ecotrail events held around Europe. Furthermore, the Eco-friendly concepts fits perfectly to our destination.”
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Wicklow into the Ecotrail family” adds Jean Charles Perrin, Ecotrail founder and CEO of Ecotrail International. “Trail Running is one of the fastest-growing sport in the world, and Wicklow is a fantastic addition to our destinations. Having seen the beauty of Wicklow late last year, Ecotrail Wicklow might just become one of our most popular events.”

Like all our four race distances, our 45 km route begins on Bray harbour front. Leave behind the seaside promenade to tackle the steep climb to the iconic cross on Bray Head. Here you bid farewell to your views of the Irish Sea and turn towards the mountains proper.
You traverse mixed trails across the Little and Great Sugarloaf Mountains, passing through the scenic Kilruddery Estate on-route to the Wicklow Way – a 132 km walking trail stretching south out of the Irish capital Dublin. Your journey home begins at the foot of the Powerscourt Waterfall.
As you approach the finish line you will enjoy views across Dublin Bay before receiving a true Irish welcome at the finish line in Bray.
Please note that the current routes should be considered provisional. Final routes will not vary markedly and will be locked down during Spring.

WELCOME TO ECOTRAIL WICKLOW 27 KM!
Our 27km trail race ‘fills the gap’ between the short 15 km route and the longer distances. Like the other races in the series you start on the scenic promenade at Bray seafront and take in the challenging climb to the little seaside hill – Bray Head.
The 27km race continues to follow the longer races through Kilruddery Estate out past both the Little and Great Sugarloaf mountains. As you return you will complete essentially a loop of both of these spectacular limestone peaks. Most of the trails on the 28km route are hard-packed and rocky trails with brief road sections.
As you approach the finish line you will enjoy views across Dublin Bay before receiving a true Irish welcome at the finish line in Bray.

WELCOME TO ECOTRAIL WICKLOW 17 KM!
The 17 km race is the most widely accessible of all the races in our series but don’t be fooled into thinking that you will miss out on a lot just because you picked the shortest distance!
You begin at the promenade at Bray seafront before climbing up the slopes of the coastal hill Bray Head where you can look out across the Irish Sea. From here you enter the Elizabethan Kilruddery Estate before a run up and around the Little Sugarloaf – a limestone mountain carved out by the ancient sea that once covered this area of the Irish coast.
You return via Bray Head where you are greeted first by views over Dublin Bay and then by a true Irish welcome at the finish line! The 17 km almost entirely on hard-packed on rocky trails with a few very short road sections as you cross between Bray Head and the Little Sugarloaf.
Please note that the current routes should be considered provisional. Final routes will not vary markedly and will be locked down during Spring.
