Race for Research started in 2011 as an event called "Walk Away From Cancer". Over 200 participants came out to show their support for the UW Carbone Cancer Center, with a unified goal: leave cancer in the dust! We raised over $17,500 and knew we could not stop there.
In 2012, we decided to change things up. Recognizing the urgent need for funds for new research, we renamed the event Race for Research and added the 5K component. From there, the rest is history.
In 2019, we partnered with the American Family Insurance Championship to bring UW Carbone’s Race for Research to their lineup of events in June! Over 1,200 community members joined us to run and walk on the beautiful Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, adjacent to the University Ridge Golf Course. We were honored to be able to offer our fundraisers the opportunity to direct their efforts towards the cancer research fund of their choice at UW Carbone. Thanks to them, we were able to raise $170,00 for innovative cancer research here in Madison!
We took a pause in 2020 due to COVID-19, and came back together virtually the next year during a two-week virtual challenge. Our supporters proudly raised $65,000 for adult and pediatric cancer research at UW Carbone and the American Family Children’s Hospital!
