This unique event offers a splendid mix of pavement, dirt roads, and trails, providing a picturesque course for runners of all levels. Immerse yourself in the vibrant community atmosphere as you and your friends partake in this special race, which is more than just a physical challenge; it’s an opportunity to support the local Mancos Public Library through fundraising efforts. The half marathon is exclusive, limited to only 150 runners, so secure your spot in advance. As an added incentive for supporting the library, participants who raise $500 in donations will have their entry fees reimbursed. Social media channels provide updates and information, with accounts on Instagram and Facebook under @rockymountainraces.
Packet pickup occurs at the Mancos Public Library, located at 211 W 1st St, Mancos, CO 81328, providing a seamless race day experience. Parking is convenient and located just a short walk from the library. On race morning, the half marathon begins with a “gun” start at 8:00 AM, followed by the 5K at 8:30 AM, and a free kids' race at 9:30 AM, making this a family-friendly event.
The Cowboy Half course features approximately 60% gravel roads and trails and 40% pavement, traversing lightly traveled two-lane roads and winding through private and BLM land. Caution is advised along the trail portion, which offers a glimpse of the natural recovery of areas affected by past fires. The 5K course is an out-and-back on a scenic paved road, with a rewarding downhill return to the library, where you can cool off in the Mancos River.
Five aid stations are strategically placed along the course, stocked with water and Tailwind Endurance, ensuring participants stay hydrated. Additional amenities like gels and nuts are provided at certain stations, with port-a-potties available on the route. Although there is no time limit for the race, the final aid station will close at 12:15 p.m. for safety reasons.
Ensuring runner safety, the course is marked with cones and monitored by course marshals. While headphones in both ears are discouraged, strollers are welcome in the 5K, though dogs are not permitted. Enjoy the thrill of the race with mile markers and prominent signage guiding your way.
Spectators can enjoy the race from the start/finish line at the library or designated locations on the course, ensuring a non-intrusive viewing experience. Experience the race's cowboy flair with complimentary campfire coffee, snacks from a local chuckwagon, and a post-race celebration featuring a beer garden.
Participants receive a finisher’s medal, a custom race shirt, and access to a post-race lunch. The event also includes a professionally timed race with results available online and at the venue. For those seeking accommodation, the Mancos Valley offers a variety of lodging options, making it a perfect weekend getaway.
Prepare for cooler morning temperatures, typical of mid-October weather, and expect daytime warmth. Utilize aid stations to maintain hydration throughout the event. Please note that refunds, transfers, or deferrals are not offered for this race. Join us for an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Mancos Valley!
