With the birth of the Oregon Interscholastic Cycling League in 2017, more middle and high school students across the Beaver State are getting a chance to explore the outdoors we all hold dear. As part of the larger National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), student-athletes in the Oregon MTB League are able to train and participate with their peers in high-quality mountain bike events that emphasize the value of participation, camaraderie, positive sporting behavior, and well-being over traditional competition.
In addition to the annual race series, the Oregon MTB League program includes trail maintenance, bike packing, and mountain biking skills clinics. These programs provide more than just physical activity; they are the catalyst for an improved quality of life through outdoor recreation, meaningful relationships, and a supportive community for Oregon's youth.
The "Hop Head Hundred" is an annual fundraiser for the Oregon MTB League as a way to bring exposure and financial support to their mission. With fourteen teams across the state, totaling over 500 athletes, as well as a growing network of friends and family who support the athletes themselves, it's the perfect reason to hop in the saddle for a ride through the Willamette Valley.
With three distances to choose from, supported aid stations, and friendly volunteers, the "Hop Head Hundred" lets each participant relax as they pedal and take in the sights of the majestic Willamette Valley. Each distance category wraps up with a beautiful crossing of the Willamette River via the iconic Buena Vista Ferry, and meanders back into Independence just in time for a post-ride "hoppy hour" at the Independence Hotel with live music. Join Swift Summit NW, LLC for a premiere celebration of bikes, "Barley-Pop", and beautiful country roads in the former "Hop Capital of the World", Independence, Oregon.
