The Christina Bohn Memorial 5K for PMDD Awareness marks the first anniversary of the signing of the bill recognizing October 2nd as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) Awareness Day in the state of Missouri. On November 3, 2021, Christina Elizabeth Bohn died from suicide. At 33 years old, a thoracic ICU nurse, wife, and mother to two young children, Christina took her own life. For more than ten years, she had battled a relentless and debilitating cycle of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and hopelessness. At first, this cycle seemed random, but finally, she and her parents connected this cycle to her menstrual cycle. Just three months before her passing, Christina received a diagnosis of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). But after years of suffering without answers or the proper treatments, the pain was too great.
Christina's story is heartbreaking, but it's sadly not uncommon among PMDD sufferers. PMDD is a cyclical, hormone-based mood disorder, often so severe and debilitating that over 30% of sufferers will not just consider, but attempt to end their own lives. PMDD affects millions of women worldwide, but many will go undiagnosed and untreated for decades, just like Christina. Due to stigma, lack of awareness and research, and even medical gaslighting, the wait for an accurate diagnosis of PMDD is 12 years. Thank you for participating in this race. We cannot lose more incredible women like Christina to this condition.
