Anna's Army is a group "Attacking Ataxia" and showing support for Anna Gordon in her battle with Friedreich's ataxia.
It all started at a high school basketball game with a group of students that wanted to show support for Anna Gordon in her battle with Friedreich's ataxia (FA). the students named themselves Anna's Army and wore purple "attacking ataxia" t-shirts to create awareness for this progressive, neurological disease that only affects 1 out of 50,000 people. Anna spoke to her class mates by saying, "TODAY MATTERS, whether you have a progressive disease or not, we need to make every day count." The students started a twitter account with inspirational messages and kids from other schools started joint #Anna's Army. Today, there are thousands members making a difference by creating awareness and searching for a cure.
Friedriech's Ataxia is a rare, neuromuscular disease that usually strikes between the ages of five and fifteen years. Symptoms include loss of coordination (ataxia) in arms and legs; energy deprivation and muscle loss; vision impairment, hearing loss, slurred speech, aggressive scoliosis (curvature of the spine): diabetes mellitus, and a serious heart condition. While mental capabilities remain completely intact, the progressive loss of muscle and coordination leads to full time use of a wheelchair.
Currently, there is no treatment or cure for FA. Anna's Army is working hard to change the future for people with FA by creating awareness and raising funds for research. Because of the support of this community, last year, Anna was able to travel to Philadelphia, PA and to Minneapolis, MN participate in research with some of the top FA physicians and scientists in the world.
