We invite you to be a part of our inaugural Jerome Kirkland Sr. Cancer Awareness 5K Walk/Run, aka (“Captain’s 5K”), scheduled November 9th, 2024, at McCurry Park located in Fayette County. The Captain’s 5K celebrates our commitment to community service, health and wellness awareness.

The Thomas “TJ” Jefferson Foundation, Inc. (TJF), is a twenty-year-old non-profit organization comprised of members of the Theta Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. 

TJF is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation established in September 2003 to raise funds for scholarships for deserving high school seniors and undergraduate students who demonstrated high academic excellence in the communities of Coweta County and Fayette County.

 

5K  Run/Walk Registration:  

$25  'Early Bird' Pre-Registration Fee....(Through Sept. 30, 11:59pm)$35  Pre-Race Registration Fee...(Oct. 1 through Nov. 6, 11:59pm)$45  Day of Race Registration Fee.  NOTE: Pre-Race Registration runs until 11:59 PM, Wednesday evening, November 6th, HOWEVER, you must register by Sunday, Nov. 3rd, 11pm, to guarantee your T-shirt size and lock in at the reduced rate!  

 

'Virtual 5K' Registration:  

$25  Pre-Race Registration FeeNOTE: Virtual participants do not receive a T-shirt and are not considered eligible for Awards.  This is a support role participation. 

 

The first 50 participants in the 5K Run/Walk will receive a special goody bag!!

 

5K Race Route: 
Please see the attached 5K Route Map.  This USATF-Certified 5K Course begins and ends in McCurry Park .  It is scenic, very fast, and a PEACHTREE ROAD RACE QUALIFIER!  The course travels along some newly paved perimeter roads before entering the park again and winding through the paved walking/running path before finishing on a slightly-downhill path.

 

Race Start-Finish & Race Day Parking:
Both the Start and Finish Line(s) are located in parking lot of McCurry Park located at 180 McDonough  Rd., Fayetteville, GA  30214.  There is plenty of parking available in the main lot, less than 100m. from BOTH the start and finish.

Pre-Race Packet Pick-up for those pre-registered:
Pre-Race Packet Pick-up will be held Friday, October 18th from 10 AM – 6 PM at Tabernacle Baptist Church.  TBC is located at 31 Douglas St., Cartersville, GA. - Additional information will be made available on the exact location of the TBC Campus as the packet pick-up date draws closer! 

 

Awards:
Awards will be given to the following: 
*Top 3 Overall Male and Top 3 Overall Female Winners
*Top Masters Male and Top Masters Female Winners
*Top 3 Male & Female in the following Age Categories: 14-Under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 & Over

 

Results:

The race will be professionally-timed by Wire2Wire Running, LLC Wire2WireRunning.comW2W uses R.F.I.D. technology and MyLaps equipment... the same used in the Peachtree R.R., the Boston Marathon, the Tour de France, and the London Marathon.Finish Results & Age Group Results will be available after the race: The Captain's 5K * RACE RESULTS

Want to know more about 'Captain Kirk,' Jerome Kirlkand Sr.?     R E A D   O N . . . 

 

     Jerome J Kirkland Sr, affectionally nick named "Cap't. Kirk" by his brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., was born in Camden NJ (May 7, 1944) and a long-time resident of Newnan GA. He was a Vietnam War combat veteran (SSgt, USA); City Councilman and Board of Education member (Plainfield NJ); Educator / Coach (Dekalb County Schools GA); Parish Council Chairman (Newnan Chapel UMC, Newnan GA) and Elder and Leader of Thrive Ministry (GO Church, Sharpsburg GA).

     Jerome was the Founding Father and chartered member of the Theta Lambda Lambda (TLL) Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. that serves Coweta /Fayette counties. Jerome was the catalyst in TLL Chapter providing over $250,000 in scholarships for college bound students; sponsoring blood drives and other community health initiatives; supporting Cancer Relay for Life; establishing several mentoring programs and countless other community service initiatives. 

     TLL Chapter's tremendous impact on the Coweta / Fayette County community is due to Jerome's outstanding dedication and leadership. Jerome fought the good fight and succumbed to cancer (November 20, 2023). He left an endearing and enduring legacy. The men of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc, TLL Chapter proudly named the 5K run after Jerome J Kirkland Sr to honor his legacy in establishing scholarships for college bound seniors in Coweta/Fayette counties and  for promoting men's health /cancer awareness and community service.
