Thank you for registering for the Bethpage 300K brevet presented by the Long Island Randonneurs! This brevet is sanctioned by Audax Club Parisien (ACP) and Randonneurs USA (RUSA), whose rules and regulations we will follow. NOTE: Again, for 2023, the Long Island Randonneurs is requiring RUSA membership in order to participate in our brevets. Please visit RUSA.org to join the national organization. If not attached to another RUSA chapter, please designate NY-Long Island (RUSA Club Code #932005) as your club preference. There is a nominal $30 annual membership fee. Lastly, no one under the age of 18 is permitted to ride one of our brevets, whether accompanied by a parent/guardian/adult or not. Lastly, there is no membership fee for the Long Island club.

r     The $35 entry fee helps to cover administrative costs, route planning, food at start and finish, and event insurance. Sorry, but there will be no refunds after pre-registration closes on May 17th. No 'day of event' registration is offered this year.

r     Participants will be required to sign a Liability Waiver, review separate Safety Instructions (see below), and pass a bicycle inspection before the start of the ride.  Helmets, lights, and reflective gear is required and cue sheets and GPS files will be emailed to all registered riders AFTER the close of on-line registration at midnight on May 17th.

r     Complete details about this event can be found at www.LIRando.org.

The ride starts and finishes at the LIRR Parking Lot in Bethpage (down the street from Bike Junkie).  The ride will start promptly at 6 AM.  Bike inspection is at 5:30 AM (see RUSA brevet rules below).

Over mostly flat terrain, the ride heads straight up into Long Island's Gold Coast then straight east on the North Fork, all the way to Orient Point State Park before turning and taking a more central route on the return through the pine barrens with some nice rollers on the run back into Bethpage.  Lastly, to be an official finisher, you have 20 hours (until 2:00 AM on Sunday morning) to finish the ride and present your completed brevet card to event staff at the final controle, Red Volpe Pizza, in Bethpage.  Note, the pizza parlor closes at 10PM. The finish then moves to the LIRR parking lot where we started.

This ride will be unsupported on the road, but services will be available at most checkpoints and we'll have food at the start and finish. Most controles offer food/beverage/restrooms. We'll also have a small selection of lights, batteries, tires, tubes and other merchandise for sale at the start, in case you forget something. Please note that food, water, supplies are available up to 15 minutes before the 6 AM start.

Randonneurs USA (RUSA) brevet rules apply to this event (see www.RUSA.org for more information). Please take the time to review the Safety Instructions for this event (shown below and subject to change following the pre-ride by the organizer; Notifications of any changes to the Safety Instructions come in the final pre-ride communicae after the close of on-line event registration and/or via announcement prior to the start of the ride). Because this ride begins at sunrise and many riders will finish at/after sunset, working lights (front and rear), reflectors, reflective apparel (sash/vest and ankle bands, at a minimum), and helmet are REQUIRED.  Lights on ½ hour before sunset and remain on SOLID until conclusion of the brevet.  This brevet is an ACP-certified event.  See www.RUSA.org for more information.

Lastly, please obey all traffic laws and ride safely.  Event runs rain or shine.  Good luck!

Bethpage 300K Brevet ¨ Safety Instructions ¨ Sat., May 20, 2023

Welcome to the Bethpage 300K presented by the Long Island Randonneurs!  Thank you for registering for this event.  Among our responsibilities as the organizers of this event, are to provide you with a route that is reasonably suitable for long distance cycling and to help you have a successful and enjoyable day.  Your responsibilities as the rider, are 1) to show up in reasonable physical condition for the event, 2) to bring a safe and reliable machine, and 3) to wear your helmet, have whatever items you believe you'll need for a day on the road, comply with all traffic laws along the course, as well as any additional safety requirements brought by Randonneurs USA (www.RUSA.org) and/or the Long Island Randonneurs (www.LIRando.org).

Helmet, front and rear lights, ankle bands, and reflective vest or sash are REQUIRED. Check-in opens between 5:15-5:30. Coffee, water, bagels and schmeer will be provided prior to the 6AM start. You have 20 hours to complete this ride to be considered as an official finisher.  Any rider still on the course at 11PM MUST call in to report their status.  Please take a few moments to review the Safety Instructions for this brevet:

Bike Inspection - Please be sure to get your brevet card stamped for your pre-ride bike inspection. We will be looking for the following items:Helmet - Mandatory at all times. No helmet, no ride.Reflective Gear - Reflective ankle bands (2) and sash or vest.Front & Rear Lights - You must demonstrate that they are working. Front light should be white and 500 lumen (minimum), 1000 lumen (preferred). Rear light should be red (not amber) and set to steady (not blinking) mode. Ideally, you should also have backups of both front and rear lighting for this event.Brake Check – We check that front/rear brakes appear to be in working order before the start of the ride.Comply with NYS Traffic Laws - Please ride on the right and comply with all NYS Traffic Laws while on course.  Use proper hand signals for all turns and stopping.  Respect the rights of other cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians at all times.  No phone use, photography, or texting while riding. Stop at all lights.Paceline Style - When riding as a group, please ride in paceline style, no more than two abreast (traffic/road conditions allowing).  Please avoid forming a large bunch or pack at any point in the ride. Maintain your line and be cognizant of the riders in front of / behind you. Call out when overtaking slower riders (e.g., "On your left!"). Call out or use hand signals when alerting others to traffic, debris, road conditions, or when stopping.  BEWARE OF ROAD/TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND POTENTIAL HAZARDS AT ALL TIMES!Conserve Yourself - In general, the first 50 miles and the last 30 miles are the most challenging parts of this ride.  Therefore, ease into it until you reach Port Jefferson and then be sure to keep a little in reserve for the run in to Bethpage at the end of the day.  Enjoy the ride but stay alert at all times, especially later in the day near dusk and when fatigue may be setting in.Lights On! - With the 6AM START, lights likely won’t be necessary in the morning. If running on batteries, that will allow you to conserve your charge for later in the day.  At 6 PM, I’m asking all riders to put their rear light to blinking for increased visibility.  Please don your reflective gear when you turn your both your front and rear lights ON SOLID at approximately 7:50PM. Riders found with insufficient visibility from ½ hour before and any time after sunset (as determined by the RBA) are subject to immediate disqualification. Sunset is at approximately 8:20PM. Controles - There are six (6) controles on the entire course. There are three (3) manned controles - Controles #1 (Start), #2 (La Bon Boulangerie in Port Jefferson), and #6 (Finish).  There are three (3) unmanned controles - Controles #3 (7-Eleven in Greenport), #4 (Subway in Riverhead), and #5 (Dunkin Donuts in Ronkonkoma). Please be sure to retain receipts from each of these controles. Lastly, there are four (4) Information Controles on the course. Please be sure to record the answers to each controle question on your brevet card (pencils are available at start).Food / Hydration - In addition to bagels, bananas, coffee, water, and sports drink offered at the Start, and pizza provided at the end of the ride, there will be ample opportunity to replenish your water/supplies either at convenience stores along the way or at the manned controle (in Port Jefferson) on course.  Most controle points have restrooms and snacks/drinks to purchase.Mechanical Assistance - Mechanical support is NOT provided on this ride. In true randonneuring style, riders are supposed to be self-sufficient in this regard (e.g., flat tires). Should you be in need of assistance, there are bicycle shops along or near the course.  Should you have a major mechanical and need to abandon, see below.Abandon - This is technically an unsupported brevet.  However, as we will have at least one vehicle (Odyssey minivan) and staff on the course and we could accommodate a limited number of people for sag, if need be.  At the same time, we offer no guarantee of sag service. Be prepared to make your own arrangements. LIRR train service is available from Greenport and Riverhead. If you are a AAA member, they now offer pick-up service for bicyclists. Plan accordingly. Note: Should you abandon the ride without letting us know, we wouldn't have any way of knowing that. If you have to abandon the ride, please inform us immediately at:  Stephen Yesko, RBA - Cell (917) 992-4294.  Call and/or Text.ACCIDENTS! - Should you become injured or arrive on the scene of an accident resulting in an injured person (rider, motorist, or passer-by) please proceed immediately as follows:Call 911 for an ambulance, describing as best you can your location and the condition of the injured person(s).Call us to let us know IMMEDIATELY. If the injured party is a participant of our brevet, please identify the rider(s) involved (Rider # / Name on brevet card).

Should there be no injury, but material damage involved, please report to us nonetheless.  In either case, we will then take some time to talk to you and complete an insurance incident report together with you. We have every rider's emergency contact. We will use this contact only with the agreement of the rider, or by default if the rider is incapacitated. Thank you for your cooperation and for following the rules.  Have a safe and enjoyable ride!
