Similar to how military personnel are often referred to as ‘boots on the ground’, airline and airport staff are named ‘boots in the air.’ This title refers to the notion that airline workers are the nation’s air defense against human trafficking. More and more survivors of modern day slavery are transported by planes. According to Polaris, a non-profit group that fights human trafficking, “71 percent of the victims are on planes en-route to a life of sex, drugs, torture and possibly death." The airline industries and organizations are now joining the fight to combat this growing problem. That's why airline staff are receiving training on how to recognize questionable behavior. Also, Anti Human Trafficking posters are now hung throughout airports and aviation centers.
Thus, this spring, The University of Dubuque's Spartan Nation Liberation Foundation (SNLF), a UD student organization combatting human trafficking, is pairing up with the Dubuque Regional Airport and offering another stunning event! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 9 for the fourth, ever, 5k walk/run being held right on the airstrip! Check in is at 8:15 am, with the walk/run beginning at 9:00! Registration fee is $15 and includes food, water, T-shirt and a lot fun. Come out and help spread awareness about human trafficking! The event is also being sponsored by UD Aviation students and the Dubuque Coalition Against Human Trafficking.
You may or may not get a t-shirt if signing up after 5 days ahead of the race date.
