Lettuce Run 5K - NY

Please join the Van Cortlandt Track Club in our first ever Lettuce Run 5K to raise money for the Friendly Fridge Foundation, which was created with the sole purpose of supporting the Friendly Fridge BX with the purpose of rescuing and redirecting food into the community through outreach and action. The need is so great and the opportunity to effect change is enormous. The community has been so supportive that the Friendly Fridge BX is now in need of a more permanent location to take in more food for redistribution. There are possible locations but they need the funding to cover the annual rent. We have a lofty goal for this race, more than our club has ever raised in a single event, but we know our community is strong and runners value access to healthy food so we have faith that we will come together and raise the money they need. 

Why Do We Need the Friendly Fridge BX?

1. A single head of lettuce can take up to 25 years to decompose in a landfill, giving off harmful methane gas the whole time.

2. On average, the Friendly Fridge BX redirects over 55,000 lbs of food every month.

3. The Fridge stays full for less than an afternoon every day.

4. Last year alone, the Friendly Fridge BX served over 28,000 bowls of hot, nutritious vegetarian soup made mostly from redirected vegetables and rescued bread.

5. The Friendly Fridge BX partners with over 25 nearby schools, houses of worship and community organizations to rescue and redirect food. Nothing goes to waste.

6. The Friendly Fridge BX experiences over 2,500 visits weekly - mostly seniors and working people. 

This is a family friendly event, all abilities are welcome! If you're not interested in running the 5k, there will be a 1 mile walk and we will have kids races will start at 11am so bring the whole family! We will have giveaways, and the usual age group prizes and all money raised will go to support the Friendly Fridge BX and their quest to open a storefront to serve the community.
