Über die Veranstaltung

The Tokyo Marathon is the largest marathon race in all of Asia, boasting an impressive 30,000 places for runners. With a lottery system used to select runners from the hundreds of thousands of applicants, Japan is definitely a nation of people who love to run. This relatively new event is held in the month of February, which is a great time for marathoning, given the mean temperature of 7 degrees Celsius.

Japan is known for its elite marathon races, which typically possess strict qualifying standards. Yet Tokyo Marathon stands apart from other mass races and elite races alike, being the only one in Japan to encompass an extensive elite field and a large base of participants. The Tokyo Marathon is further distinguished by its theme, “The Day We Unite,” which invites not only runners, but also volunteers and spectators to join forces on race day.

A great marathon people are so friendly! One thing to be aware of is the cut off times at the various distances throughout the race, I was glad I knew about them prior to going.

Just FYI, the map shown is the old course. The new course finishes at the Imperial Palace, not at the Darth Vader building. Huge race, 35,000+ competitors. Very flat course and the new course is flatter than the old one. I really love it!

42.195 Km. It's a gold label race. Lots of runners, but staggered start based on estimated finishing time. Very flat.

Well.. I just love Tokyo. It's my favorite city in the world. You just can't compare its vibe with any other city. It's crazy, it's wicked, it's strange...and it's full of Sushi. When I first visited this city in 2012 I knew I had to come back and run its marathon. So in 2016 I got in. It's one of the (overrated) majors and therefor it's hard to get in. But I got lucky in the ballot. If you're not lucky, go out and run Kyoto (the week before Tokyo). And visit Tokyo as well. The marathon itself is extremely well organized. That's how Japanese people take care of everything in their country. The bag drop system was amazing. All bags (more than 30.000 participants) all sorted straight in equal patterns. You just can't believe your eyes. From start till finish, they really take care of you and the Japanese runners are marathon minded. Although more and more foreigners run Tokyo, it still is a Japanese party. If you run Tokyo, make sure you have some time to see more of the country. It's worth it.

Great Crowd. A little bit disapointed for the water station. Not enough water & food for the runner.

Loved it. It was well organised. Wonderful to see the city out to support the run! Except for the light rain, it was a spectacular run.
