ABOUT BRAD SCHOENER

Brad Schoener was a music director in the Upper Darby School District for 25 years. He lost a courageous battle to leiomyosarcoma cancer in 2009, but not before having an incredibly positive impact on the lives of countless students, colleagues, and friends. Brad was loved wherever he went and helped mold the future paths of thousands of children through his passion for music and his ability to bring out that passion in his students. 

  THE BRAD SCHOENER MEMORIAL MUSIC FUND

Proceeds from the 5K Run support the Brad Schoener Memorial Music Fund and its MusicMan Academy programs. The mission of Brad's Fund is to support the musical abilities and aspirations of instrumental music students in the Upper Darby School District through the funding of instruments, instruction, and experiences for interested and talented students who might not otherwise have the opportunities due to personal circumstances. Brad's Fund is supported by the Upper Darby Arts & Education Foundation. 

  WHAT'S NEW IN 2023??

NEW FOR SPECTATORS: Come hungry and wake up with Five Points Coffee while cheering on your runner! Also available for morning refreshments will be East Coast Mini Donuts -- featuring HOT fresh mini donuts, donut sundaes (that means with ice cream!)  and donut fried oreos! Not to mention - we are welcoming Calaveras Street Tacos and their delicious homemade breakfast empanadas and lunch tacos for healthy and yummy options!

NEW FOR 2023! JOIN THE SCHOENER MUSICMAN 5K AFTER PARTY AT THE ARSENAL!  The Artillery Brewing Company is pleased to support the mission and the programs of the Schoener Memorial Fund that help bring music alive for the children of Upper Darby. On the day of the Schoener 5K event, we will be hosting a live music event on the patio at our new location, The Arsenal Taproom at 4221 Ferne Blvd in Drexel Hill.  As a participant in the event, show your race bib at the Arsenal and receive a free pint of Artillery beer (over 21 only) OR their NEW non-alcoholic "Light Infantry" soda on race day! What is a "Light Infantry" soda?? A delicious American Sarsaparilla concocted from Sarsaparilla root, ginger, licorice root, birch bark, star anise, Madagascar vanilla, and spearmint. Sweetened with honey and enlivened with effervescent carbonation, this delectable soda will keep you bubbly, hydrated, and light on your feet - even after the race! We look forward to seeing you there! 

Look for the tent on Arlington Field behind the Arlington Mansion (Toppitzer Funeral Home)! We will kick off the day's festivities at 8:30 am with the "Running of the Royals" as we "hold court" and crown the 2023 King (or Queen) of the Upper Darby Royal Family!  As always -- look for special guests during our pre-race festivities!  This year we are welcoming back the PHILLIE PHANATIC! Be sure to arrive in time to see the Phanatic's antics from 8:15 - 9:15 am!  Families are encouraged to complete the 5K or the 1 Mile Spirit Walk together and then... we have SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE as we celebrate our 13th year of keeping Brad Schoener's wishes alive for Upper Darby children. As always - be ready to hear LIVE MUSIC along the 5K route - steel drums, bagpipes, brass ensembles, drumlines... and MORE!

In addition to providing run and walk participants with swag bags and race shirts, The MusicMan 5K is known for its unique finisher medals - actual working mini-harmonicas! Age Group awards are given (full size harmonicas) and Overall Male/Female race winners receive 18K gold plated harmonicas! It's a very musical finish!

•Free Music Lessons for Students as well as Camp & Educational Scholarships 

The Brad Schoener 5K Run / Walk is the primary fundraiser for the MusicMan Academy programs and initiatives.
