About the event
Surprising to many, the Honolulu Marathon on a small, tropical island in the Pacific Ocean is one of the top ten largest marathons in the world. With 25,000 annual participants, the dream of being equal to the Boston Marathon is well on its way. Of these runners, over 60% are from Japan. Finishers reach the Kapiolani Park near the Diamond Head crater and are welcomed with a joyful festival, award ceremony, and post-race malasadas (a Portuguese donut). The course is mostly flat, apart from a 38m climb at Diamond Head which is passed twice. The 5am start is marked with fireworks and there is no time limit; the last finisher usually arrives long after others have cooled down in the Pacific ocean and ordered a Mai-Tai. The Sports Expo is held for three days with concerts, luaus, and a pre-race dinner. For those not up to the full 42.2km, there is a 10km option. The Kalakaua Merrie Mile is a one mile race in Waikiki on the day before the marathon.
